                     M.S.T.C. Mission Statement

Picture
The Montreal Shakespeare Theatre Company is a non-profit, professional theatre company whose mission is to provide an inspiring and unforgettable theatre experience for students of all ages. Employing an innovative production staff and dynamic actors, we perform Shakespeare’s timeless themes in a contemporary voice.

                   The M.S.T.C.

In the past 10 years we have performed 20 plays at over 200 schools and over 300 shows to over 70,000 kids.

Students of all ages benefit greatly from these modern adaptations and have a better understanding of these classic works of literature.  Teachers also are aided by these adaptations by helping them bring to life the wonderful world of Shakespeare.

We have performed for private schools as well as renowned public schools. However our proudest moments are performing for schools in lower income areas where very often the students have never seen live theatre before. Being able to captivate such an audience and seeing in their faces that they have thoroughly enjoyed our production gives us a great sense of accomplishment. We have received much feedback from the teachers of these schools on how our performances have inspired classroom discussions about Shakespeare, which is truly the most gratifying and rewarding part of our tour.

As part of our package we also offer workshops for the students; consisting of a brief synopsis of the show, an explanation of the way we have re-written the play in modern English, a brief history of Shakespeare and his plays, and finally a little bit about acting in general.

The teachers appreciate this educational value added to the whole experience and the students enjoy it as well. In fact after seeing our show, some students have expressed to us in letters and otherwise that we have inspired them to pursue acting careers. Learning a bit about the process and later seeing the final product made them feel that being a part of a production is a goal that they would like to work towards and achieve.

The play featured on this year’s tour will be "ROMEO & JULIET". We will be offering the show in three different versions: English, French and bilingual. You choose!

The tour begins mid-October 2011 and ends June 2012 and it looks to be the best one yet. Our set design is incredible and we will be bringing a show that will mesmerize both students and teachers alike. The set will be made to look like your school. We will be putting up school banners and using teachers' and students' names in the production as well as wearing your school colors!

The Montreal Shakespeare Theatre Company takes pride in its productions and believes in professionalism at all levels, from the rewriting of scripts and making sure that the essence of the play is not lost, to costumes and lighting, and of course hiring excellent actors. It is our goal to continue providing work for these actors and to continue to educate, in the most entertaining way, as many students as possible. Some of which would never be able to (or want to) see an actual play. We hope that by making students' first theatre experience a pleasurable one, they will continue to appreciate and enjoy the arts and maybe learn something in the process.

We currently tour Elementary and High Schools in the province of Quebec and Ontario with our unique adaptations.

Our ultimate goal is to expand throughout Canada and to have our Shakespeare productions become a regular part of the curriculum for Schools across the country.
